Short answer: if you want keyword flows across Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp and TikTok, ManyChat is still the default. If you mostly want your Instagram comments and DMs answered the way you would answer them, without building flows, SwipeReply is the alternative built for that. If you want the cheapest keyword to DM tool for a small account, look at Inro. If you want an AI agent that sells in the DMs, look at Chatfuel. The rest of this guide explains how we got there, with prices checked in September 2026.
Why people look for a ManyChat alternative
ManyChat earned its place. "Comment GUIDE and I will send it to you" became a creator reflex because ManyChat made comment to DM automation easy. But three things send people looking elsewhere in 2026.
1. The pricing moved to active contacts
ManyChat now bills by active contacts: every person who interacts with one of your automations in a billing month, counted once. On the current pricing page the free plan includes 25 active contacts a month and 4 automations, Essential ($17 a month, or $14 billed yearly) includes 250, Pro ($39 a month, or $29 billed yearly) includes 2,500, Business ($99 a month, or $69 billed yearly) includes 7,500, and Advanced ($199 a month, or $139 billed yearly) includes 25,000. Above the limit you pay per extra contact, from $0.10 on Essential down to $0.025 on Business. A reel that takes off is exactly when your contacts spike, so the bill is hardest to predict in your best month.
2. Flows take work, and they age
Every ManyChat automation is a flow you design: trigger, conditions, messages, buttons, fallbacks. It is powerful, and it is also a second job. Keywords change, offers change, a launch ends and the flow keeps sending the old link. Most creators we talk to have two flows that work and six they forgot about.
3. Keyword bots reply like keyword bots
A flow can only answer what you predicted. The comment that says "love this, does it work for curly hair?" gets the same canned line as everyone else, or nothing. That is the gap that AI based tools close: they read the post and the comment and answer the actual question, in your voice.

The alternatives, one by one
SwipeReply: replies first, automations included
SwipeReply starts from a different question. Not "which keyword should trigger which message?" but "what would you say to this comment?". It reads your post, your reel transcript, the comment thread and your past replies, then drafts an answer in your voice. You approve with a swipe (Reply Drafts), or let the easy categories run on their own (Auto Reply): praise, emoji, questions, prices. Complaints and collab requests always wait for you.
Keyword automations are built in too (Automations): a word in the comments triggers a public reply and a DM with your link, on any post or one post, followers only if you want. So you do not have to choose between "comment GUIDE" funnels and answering the other 200 comments.
- Pricing: free forever with 100 replies a month and every feature. Growth is $49 a month (or $479 a year) for 1,500 replies, Pro is $99 a month (or $959 a year) for 6,000 replies. A reply is one comment or DM answered, so your cost follows the work done, not the size of your audience.
- Setup: connect your Instagram Professional account through the official Instagram API. No flows to build, guardrails in plain language (tone, banned words, safe topics).
- Where it is not for you: if you run WhatsApp or Messenger funnels, or you need a visual flow builder with conditions and integrations, ManyChat is the better fit.
ManyChat: still the flow builder to beat
ManyChat's strength is breadth: Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp, TikTok and Telegram, a visual builder, broadcasts, growth tools, an inbox with seats and a large template ecosystem. If your business runs on structured funnels, it is mature and well documented. The cost is the active contact meter and the time you spend maintaining flows. Our advice: if you already have flows that convert, keep them. Add an AI reply layer for everything the flows do not catch.
Chatfuel: an AI agent for the DMs
Chatfuel has moved from flow builder to "AI agent that sells". Its Business plan is $20 a month ($18 billed yearly) and includes $20 of AI credits a month; an Agency plan starts at $90. It is a good fit if your DMs are a sales channel and you want an agent that qualifies, recommends and books. It is less focused on the public comment section than SwipeReply.
Inro: the budget option for keyword automation
Inro is the closest to a lightweight ManyChat. The free plan includes 100 active contacts a month and 3 active automations, Pro starts at €12.99 a month and scales with active contacts. If all you need is "comment LINK, get the link" on a small account, it is hard to beat on price. Like ManyChat, it bills by contacts, so growth raises the bill.
Meta Business Suite: the free basics
Meta's own tools cover the basics without a third party: saved replies, FAQs in the DMs, away messages and a simple comment to message automation with a preset reply. No AI, one keyword per rule, and no drafting for the comments themselves. It is fine for a "send me the menu" use case and nothing more.
How to choose in five questions
- What do you actually want automated? Link delivery only: any keyword tool works. Answers to real questions: you need AI that reads the post, not a flow.
- How do you want to pay? Per active contact (ManyChat, Inro) rewards small audiences and punishes viral months. Per reply (SwipeReply) follows the work done.
- Who approves? If you want to see every reply before it goes out, look for an approval flow, not just an on/off switch. Reply Drafts exists for exactly that.
- Which channels? Instagram only: pick the tool that is best on Instagram. WhatsApp or Messenger too: ManyChat.
- Does it use the official API? Anything that asks for your Instagram password or runs in a browser extension is a risk to your account. Every tool in this list uses Meta's official API.
What does not change, whichever tool you pick
Meta's rules apply to all of them (we explain them in full in our comment to DM automation guide). A comment lets you send one private reply within 7 days. Once the person answers, you have a 24 hour window for free conversation. Outside that window, only a human agent may follow up, within 7 days and only for support, never for promotion. Nobody can message people who never interacted with you, and nobody should try. Tools that promise otherwise are the ones that get accounts restricted.
Our take
ManyChat is a great flow builder and a mediocre replier. SwipeReply is a great replier with the flows you actually use. If your comment section is where your community lives, start there: it is free, and you will see the drafts in your voice within minutes of connecting your account.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a free ManyChat alternative?
Yes. SwipeReply has a free forever plan with 100 replies a month and every feature, Inro has a free plan with 100 active contacts a month, and Meta Business Suite offers basic comment to message automation at no cost. ManyChat's own free plan includes 25 active contacts a month.
Can I use ManyChat and SwipeReply together?
Yes. Many creators keep their existing ManyChat funnels and use SwipeReply to answer the comments the flows ignore. Both run on the official Instagram API. Make sure only one tool sends the DM for a given keyword so people do not get two messages.
Will switching tools get my Instagram account banned?
No, as long as the tool uses the official Instagram API and follows Meta's messaging rules. The risk comes from tools that automate through your login, and from spamming people who never interacted with you.
What is the cheapest way to do comment to DM on Instagram?
For a single keyword and a preset message, Meta Business Suite is free. For flexible keyword rules on a small account, Inro's free plan or SwipeReply's free plan. Once you also want the other comments answered, SwipeReply's free plan covers both for up to 100 replies a month.
